Apocalypto doesn't qualify as a pop-culture phenomenon as I define it. Not like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, anyway. But it's still the most egregious example of Native stereotyping in the media this year.

I think I read that Apocalypto cost $81 million to make. It may earn that much through international and DVD sales, but it's not likely to earn much more. Does that demonstrate what happens when you stereotype Indians?

Well, I can't prove that the stereotypes in Apocalypto hurt it at the box office. On the other hand, several people have told me they weren't going to see the movie after reading my postings on it. If enough people reacted this way, it might very well dampen Apocalypto's earnings.
