More on Navajo surgeon

First Navajo woman surgeon:  Alvord's story is remarkable Alvord's story is one of discovering your inner abilities and making the most of opportunities. Through her own experiences, Alvord is keenly aware that the modern health care system often is a strange fit when it comes to Navajo culture.

Many Navajo people do not trust hospitals since many of their own have died in medical centers. In addition, they have problems with physical examinations and a lack of cultural focus from sacred objects or native prayers.

Using her history as a proud Navajo woman, Alvord is a strong proponent of mixing the old culture with modern medicine. The end result is encouraging for many American Indian patients.
