When he first attended college in 1959, the BIA only gave educational grants to attend colleges and universities near Indian boarding schools. Thus, writerfella was forced to attend Kansas University and to board at Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kansas. The conceit was doublefold: avoid having to pay college room and board AND place the grantee under BIA supervision.
