To plant firmly into peoples mind's the forced assimilation of the indian culture into the "civilized" America? That suggestion is a slap in the face to those of us who are Native! Let the American stand as he is originally intended. I've had the good fortune to see them flying near Keystone Dam. They are very rare here - only 60 spotted pairs.Terryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05016656390968455251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29769707.post-38686049001888303142008-06-26T15:18:00.000-07:002008-06-26T15:18:00.000-07:00An e-mailer sent me this response to The American:...An e-mailer sent me this response to The American:

I'm still sort of...stunned...by the American statue project. It's so...romantic and ambitious on one hand and utterly traditional and stereotypical on the other. Plus, an Osage warrior in Creek country! That's fantastic. Rather, he remembers being chastised by a female fan at a 1980 Houston science fiction convention after mentioning the paucity of work then available to him in films and TV. "Cut your hair short like the other writers," she said from the audience. "Dress like they do, look like they do, live like they do. And you'll get work." To which writerfella replied, "Russell Bates never can be a white man. Being Native American is why he is a TV writer in the first place. No brag, just fact.
