Virginia tribes deliver deer
Tribes present Kaine their annual tributeChiefs of the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Indian tribes presented Gov. Timothy M. Kaine today with two deer in an annual ceremony marking a peace treaty from the 1600s between the Virginia Indians and the crown.
Chief Carl Custalow of the Mattaponi Indians and William Miles of the Pamunkey Indians said the deer were slain on their reservations.
In the treaty, the tribes acknowledged the sovereignty of King Charles II and the king acknowledged the rights of the Indians.
