Stamps honor Indians

Celebrating art, rituals of Native AmericansThe art of the Native American has been a popular subject for U.S. stamps. Over the years, the U.S. Postal Service has issued many stamps celebrating a variety of arts and rituals provided by the individual tribes.

A 6-cent stamp, issued in 1970 in a block of four, marking the 100th anniversary if the American Museum of Natural History, portrayed a Tlingit chief in a Haida ceremonial canoe.

Four sets of stamps in the American Folk Art series featured Native American art forms. They were a block of four 13-cent stamps in 1977, showing Pueblo pottery; four 15-cent stamps in 1980 showed Pacific Northwest masks; four 22-cent stamps in 1986 on the theme of Navajo weaving and headdresses of Plains tribes, pictured on five 25-cent booklet stamps in 1990.
