Youth to film "Karuk Voices"

Karuk Tribe seeks youths for media project featuring elders

By Donna TamThe Karuk Tribe is looking for tribal youth who want to capture the stories of the Karuk people on film.

Young people will interview Karuk elders about tribal history and the events of their lives for a project called “Karuk Voices,” a project that will be funded by a grant from the California Council for the Humanities California Story Fund. The grant will pay for the training of youth, who will work in groups to make the video recordings and then edit the content into finished films to be presented to the community at a film festival in May.

”We do have a lot of youth that are really interested in digital technology and we are always trying to get the youth interacting with the elders,” said Ruth Rouvier, the tribe's language program coordinator. “So, we thought this would be a great opportunity for the youth to use their practical skills and learn more about their cultural heritage.”Comment:  For more on the subject, see Native Documentaries and News.
