Natives at NAMM convention

Native Americans show handmade instruments at music industry convention

By Susan ValotA blues band rocks the stage in the Native American Pavilion at the recent NAMM Show at the Anaheim Convention Center. A handmade native drum set is center stage, adding a traditional component to the blues. This is the first time ever that the giant NAMM Convention for music industry professionals has included a pavilion for Native American music and instrument makers.

The walls of the small room are lined with tables showcasing drums, flutes and even electric guitars.

I was pleased to hear the NPR segment on the NAMM Native American pavilion. I enjoyed the time I spent there--had a great time talking with a vendor from my hometown for quite a while, and couldn't leave without a gorgeous rattle from Alex Maldonado and his family.

I wonder how many attendees actually visited the small room they were given upstairs away from the main exhibit floor, though.

The upshot was that you could actually hear what was going on in there. I know they're thinking of moving them all downstairs next year, but it might be really hard to hear some of the music.

The NAMM Show, the annual music industry trade show, recognized something old that’s new during its recent run in Anaheim: a Native American Pavilion that featured musicians from tribes across the country.
