'Project Runway' Designer Fashions Native American Look

Idyllwild show reflects 10 designers' personal heritage, culture

By Marcia GaweckiPatricia Michaels, a runner-up finisher from Season 11 of “Project Runway,” will be among 10 Native American designers who will showcase their fashions, jewelry and accessories during the Native American Fashion Show July 5 at Idyllwild Arts Foundation Theatre (IAF).

Attendees can expect a spectacular, full-fledged fashion event, which kicks off with the Cahuilla Bird Singers, and showcases professional models and a 3-D audio-visual presentation. Most of the fashions can be seen, touched and purchased during a reception immediately following the event, which also features Native American foods created by Freddie Bitsole.

“Fashion is something that you have to experience live and in person,” said Dr. Jessica Metcalfe, who is producing the show. Her online Native American boutique, Beyond Buckskin, features only Native American-made art, fashion and jewelry.

The fashion show will lead off with couture designs by Consuelo Pascual, Pilar Agoyo, David Gaussoin, Bethany Yellowtail, Patricia Michaels and Dorothy Grant, followed by jewelry by Kristen Dorsey and Wayne Gaussoin, and purses by Maya Stewart.IDYLLWILD: Native American fashion show features 11 designersIdyllwild Arts Summer Program will present its first Native American Fashion Show featuring the work of 11 designers at 7 pm. The public is invited to attend this free event.

The show features the fashion designs of 11 prominent and up-and-coming Native Americans, including Lifetime’s “Project Runway--Season 11” runner-up Patricia Michaels, who is affiliated with the Taos Pueblo, in Taos, N.M., and renowned designer Dorothy Grant, a member of the Haida tribe from Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

A performance by the Cahuilla Bird Singers will kick off the event.Comment:  I count 10 designers in both articles. The second article seems to have the number wrong.
