A Native writer would have captured the nuances of reservation life. It is not always like this, hell, it is hardly like this. Conditions are deplorable yet the Native Experience tends to survive, find the good and move on however they can. Instead, with "Scalped" we get another outsider "telling it like it is", which is basically what many non-Native readers want: grief porn.

SCALPED's "grief porn"
Scalped: Indian Country TPB--A ReviewFirst and foremost, I am upset that a Native writer and artist could not have done this. Because the story is a list of standard reservation clichés; there is a casino being built that will "save the people", there is the usual struggle between the "Traditionalists" and the "Sell-Outs", there are sheep-like gangs, meth, there is constant talk of "The Old Times" and the dire need to get back to them, characters monologue-ing about how it used to be, giving history lessons and reciting reservation lifestyle statistics to the reader, there is an old man who talks to "The Spirits" and at the center of it all is one BIG ANGRY INDIAN MAN. All that was missing was the constant flute music.

Comment: Go to the end of this posting to see my thoughts on it.

damn.. u call scalped comics a porno mag? No! u idiot! its a purely ficitional story, and I enjoy reading it.. im proud to say that i own all scalped comics to date, to the 13th issue and will buy more issues in future.
ReplyDeleteRemember this issue is not meant to interpret wrong ideas, its just a frickin imaginary story for entertainment for some people like me outta there.
It's offensive to us. It's no different than me creating a cartoon in which u'r entire family was full of incestuous pedophiles. People who don't know u might believe it. U would be treated differently and people would hate u for it. This comic and things like it are defamation on a massive scale. Grief pen is propaganda meant to keep whites and American Indians at odds with each other. If u refuse to understand how hurtful and damaging it can be, u'r a waste of oxygen.
Delete"Grief porn" isn't the same as pornography. Look it up if you're not sure what it means.
ReplyDeletePeople learn about Indians from "frickin' imaginary stories" like this one. That's why I criticize such stories.
I'm proud to say I read the first six issues and the series never got better than "decent." See SCALPED: Another Comic Book Gets Indians Wrong for my thoughts on the subject.
