Unearthed is a 2007 horror movie I just learned about from Roscoe Pond's blog. Here's a summary:In the desert area of Hat Creek, cows are found partially devoured and the farmers believe that a wolf is attacking the cattle. The alcoholic Sheriff Annie Flynn is called by the local farmer Rob Horn to witness the remains of an animal to request reimbursement from the government and for an accident with a tank truck that is blocking the road. However, Annie sooner discovers that an ancient alien creature sent to annihilate life on Earth hundreds of years ago was released by the Indian Kale during an archaeological excavation in the desert. The Indian Caya and a group of travelers stranded in the spot without gas together with Annie and Kale try to find a means to destroy the alien and save mankind.Comment: Luke Goss and Beau Garrett, the actors who play Kale and Caya, come from Great Britain and a West LA shopping mall, respectively. In other words, they don't seem to be Indians.
In fact, they make a part-Indian like Johnny Depp look like Sitting Bull. I'm guessing they were chosen primarily for their "hotness."
But Russell Means and Tonantzin Carmelo are billed ninth and tenth in the cast, so Unearthed isn't totally devoid of real Indians. For what it's worth.
As for the plot, releasing a creature from an archeological site sounds typical but not stereotypical. Unless the site is supposed to be an Indian burial ground. Then it's stereotypical.
Also, choosing a beautiful young starlet to play the Indian woman is stereotypical casting. It's another example of the Indian princess mentality that's persisted for centuries. We can't have Indian women who aren't gorgeous by Hollywood's standards, can we?
