8th annual Ishi gathering

Ishi Gathering starts Thursday in OrovilleAn annual event centered on Ishi, the last Yahi Indian, begins Thursday in Oroville.

It's the eighth year for the Ishi Gathering and Seminar, hosted by the Butte County Historical Society.
Some of the fun events:Thursday afternoon, the Ishi Film Festival opens at the Ehmann House, 1480 Lincoln St. "The Romance of the Vanishing Race," and "In the White Man's Image" are scheduled.

Friday includes activities for kids and adults.

For the kids, there's Ishi Day at Hewitt Park. From 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., more than 500 school children will participate in hands-on learning experiences related to local Native Americans.

For adults, a full-day seminar "Assimilation Strategies of Native Americans, 1850-1916" will feature the stories of real Native American families and how they bridged the gap between traditional native culture and today's world.
