‘It’s been a struggle’

Financing career as an athlete has been tough, swimmer Sioui saysChasing girls got Adam Sioui into the pool and sustained satisfaction kept him there, but it was parental pocketbooks that provided him buoyancy for 17 years.

“It has definitely been a struggle,” said Sioui, a three-event swimming representative for Canada in Beijing. “If my parents weren’t there to give me money, to give me support of all kinds, it’s hard to say, but I don’t think I would have made it to this level.”
And:After moving to train at the University of Calgary two years ago, the Trenton, Ont., registered Huron Tribe member got his fresh start, his “last shot unless something miraculous happens.”

He’s in the best form of his career and his coach, Jan Bidrman, who will be on deck in Beijing, said the 4x200-metre freestyle relay medal contender is one of the best swimmers the University of Calgary has “ever seen,” putting him in the ranks of Curtis Myden, three-time Olympic bronze medallist.
