Afterthought, and only because of complaints. If Burns was more or less forced to include ONE Native soldier, who would he pick? In which WWII Theater? If no one is saying whom, then he chose the one most closely documented, including with photos and/or film. 10 to 1, it's Ira Hayes. There are many others, but writerfella will bet you a dollar to a donut, it isn't Cletus Poolaw, a Kiowan. It even could be one of the codetalkers.

I'd take that bet at even odds. But you're offering 10-to-1 odds? Wow...where do I place my bet?
From what I've read, I'm betting the Indian will be an ordinary vet with no special claim to fame. I'm betting he won't be a codetalker and he definitely won't be Ira Hayes.
Why not? Because he's dead, Jim. I believe they interviewed their subjects and they'd have trouble interviewing Hayes, who died in 1955.
