One pundit did list Beach as one of the actors who got snubbed, along with such stalwarts as Jack Nicholson and Annette Bening. Oh, well...better luck next time.

Art direction would include the sets and props of the cannibal island. These arguably created more of an impression than the cannibals' speech, makeup, or costumes. In other words, much of the cannibals' made-up culture stems from the art direction. So yes, that nomination is relevant to this posting.
The sets and props are more than just "scenery." Like the cannibals' speech, makeup, and costumes, they convey the cannibals' culture (such as it is). For instance, a chair festooned with skulls says "subhuman savage" as much a leering face or a loutish costume does.
