Tribal sovereignty = "special privilege"?

Another ignoramus proves his ignorance by opening his mouth rather than keeping it closed:

Time to restore fairness in dealings

By State Rep. David DankTribes collect no sales taxes on items sold from their grocery and convenience stores, or other tribal businesses. They collect about half of normal tobacco taxes from Indian smoke shop sales. Tribal businesses pay no property taxes, the state receives little or nothing from tribal auto tags, and tribes, unlike private businesses, are free to make millions in corporate campaign contributions.

Meanwhile, the tribes reap millions from a state-issued monopoly on casino gambling in Oklahoma because of a 15-year compact that cannot be altered.

These are tax exemptions and breaks that siphon tens of millions of dollars each year from local school districts, city and county governments and our state treasury. Nontribal citizens and businesses are being taxed to make up those losses. In some cases, nontribal businesses are being driven into bankruptcy by the unfair competition made possible by these special privileges.

Does this make anyone who questions these special breaks "anti-Indian?” Of course not! People should be judged not on the basis of race or ethnicity, but by their actions. Oklahomans appreciate the unique role played by the tribes in our state’s history and culture.
Comment:  Does this make anyone who questions these special breaks "anti-Indian?” Yes, it does. It also makes them and you racists.

First of all, you're attacking Indian tribes by mischaracterizing their sovereign power to tax people as "special breaks." This shows an almost willful ignorance of the legal precedents that have established tribal sovereignty. Why exactly do you think these "tax breaks" exist, dumbbell...because this is the "Be Kind to Indians Decade"?

More to the point, you're attacking only tribes and not states and countries that Oklahoma also can't tax. Clearly you're ignorant of or prejudiced against tribal sovereignty--probably both. Alas, the fact that you single out Indians for your scorn is race-based discrimination and therefore racist.

As for the gaming compacts, did someone force the state of Oklahoma to sign them? If you don't like it, legalize casinos for everyone--now or in 15 years. Quit complaining about the so-called monopoly when the people of Oklahoma established it democratically.

Any questions? For more on the subject, see The Facts About Tribal Sovereignty.

Below:  A typical Oklahoma whiner much like the one who wrote this article. Give the Indians' land back if you don't like the outcome of US/tribal government relations, you big crybaby.

"Boo-hoo! We stole only 80% of Oklahoma rather than all of it! We want the rest...waaahhh!"

He also does not understand tax breaks. A tax break does not siphon money from those who might otherwise take it away, any more than letting a would-be crime victim keep her own purse "take away" the purse from a mugger.

But his three proposed measures really aren't that bad. Two of them in no way limit Indian sovereignty or rights.
