but nothing significant. Also, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest got four nominations
for its lively depiction of fish-faced pirates and flesh-eating Indians.
One pundit did list Beach as one of the actors who got snubbed, along with such stalwarts as Jack Nicholson and Annette Bening. Oh, well...better luck next time.

Um, er, uh, but none of those nominations for Academy Awards received by PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST possibly could be for 'flesh-eating Indians'. Best Art Direction means scenic design, set design, set construction, and set dressing, including props. That includes NO characters or people at all. The other three nominations fairly well are self-explanatory, unless there was Foley lip-smack overdubbing for the cannibals of which writerfella was unaware. Unlikely...

POSTSCRIPTUM -- And FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS grossly underperformed, thus erasing any or all hype and 'buzz' that Adam Beach may have received. At this very time, the U.S. public is warsick and thus a war film depicting U.S. troops in whatever era would not have done well, no matter how well-accomplished. Consider that the companion piece, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA is doing immensely well in both boxoffice and award nominations because it is about non-U.S. soldiers. Does reality, then, affect entertainment presentations that pretend to be about reality? Damn straight...

Art direction would include the sets and props of the cannibal island. These arguably created more of an impression than the cannibals' speech, makeup, or costumes. In other words, much of the cannibals' made-up culture stems from the art direction. So yes, that nomination is relevant to this posting.

Yes, perhaps, but until such sets are populated with characters, they only are so much scenery. Unless you mean that the Americas were in place awaiting their eventual invasion by EuroMan, as though that circumstance was unavoidable and ineluctable. Thus, is modern America only a setting for the inevitable arrival of the Arcturians? Look! Up in the sky! Thousands of saucers...!

The sets and props are more than just "scenery." Like the cannibals' speech, makeup, and costumes, they convey the cannibals' culture (such as it is). For instance, a chair festooned with skulls says "subhuman savage" as much a leering face or a loutish costume does.

That chair likely is for sale today on E-Bay. What do you bid, Rob?
