The first movie that came to my mind was Dances With Wolves. I read some of the reviews and your blog posts before seeing this movie, and was expecting to be outraged by all the negative stuff that I read, but I was absorbed into the movie. I could barely keep my mouth closed from all the excitement. It was an amazing film. The end left me wishing, "Man, wish we could have done that!"
The major element from Ferngully (not in "Dances" or "Pocahontas") that makes its way in "Avatar" is that the hero ends up transformed into one of the natives.
