Flags shocker

The Hot ButtonThe first true shock of the Oscar season has landed. And much to the amazement of many, it is Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers.

Simply put, the film is a Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil level swing and miss by a very fine director and creative force. It is thematically muddled, emotionally simplistic (if not retarded), and it commits the worst sin of all… it is a dead bore.

First of all, who is David Poland and why is he saying those terrible things about FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS? Second of all, he must forget his movies not too long after he sees them, because we all know that Tom Hanks DOES NOT SURVIVE in the movie SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Third of all, he quite easily reveals that, to his mind, films must have an obvious moral conflict and an obvious hero/villain, or they simply fail. Who is the villain in GONE WITH THE WIND? Or even the hero? Who is either the villain or the hero in CITIZEN KANE? Unless...
Of course, the reviewer must be comparing FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS with...STAR WARS! Or RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK!
What mainly is revealed in this review is that the reviewer cannot have seen the entire film and likely was out in the lobby getting popcorn or answering his cell phone or even dallying in the men's room. Else, why did he have to see it twice? This is a case where the reader must examine both what is said and why it is being said. Apparently, to the reviewer, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS had a nice beat and was easy to dance to, so he gave it a 75...

POSTSCRIPTUM: the other failure in Poland's review is that he doesn't even seem to know that the parallel feature LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA still is in production and thus is not scheduled for release until mid-2007. But perhaps that would be one too many facts for his persistence of memory.
